Illawarra · both directions
Every Illawarra suburb, priced.

The arithmetic
One receipt, and the rest of the ladder.
The Wollongong run is itemised here because the arithmetic is identical for every other line in the region. One way and return: doubled, then 10 percent off, rounded to the nearest $5.

Every suburb in the table further down is built the same way, from a $60 base, $3.30 a kilometre and the NSW Passenger Service Levy. The published fare is shown alongside the formula because the two are not always the same number. Where the published fare sits below the formula, that gap is yours. It never runs the other way.
What the fare covers
Included, and not.

Departure timing
When the car has to be at your door.
Worked backwards from the flight, not forwards from a guess. Every row uses the same 80-minute drive time published at the top of this page.
| Flight departs | Terminal | Be at the airport | Pick-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06:00 domestic | T2 / T3 | 04:00 | 02:30 |
| 07:00 international | T1 | 04:00 | 02:30 |
| 08:00 domestic | T2 / T3 | 06:00 | 04:30 |
| 09:30 international | T1 | 06:30 | 04:40 |
| 13:00 domestic | T2 / T3 | 11:00 | 09:30 |
| 17:00 international | T1 | 14:00 | 12:30 |
| 21:00 domestic | T2 / T3 | 19:00 | 17:30 |
Worked from 80 minutes of driving, plus 10 minutes to load at the kerb, plus 3 hours inside the terminal for an international departure and 2 hours for a domestic one. A 20-minute allowance is added where the drive runs through the morning peak. Arriving instead of departing? Then none of this applies: give the flight number and the pickup moves to the actual landing time, with 2 hours free at T1 and 1 hour at T2 and T3.
The corridor
The region, end to end.
The Illawarra is a strip of coast between an escarpment and the sea, about an hour long, and every trip from it to Sydney Airport shares the same corridor for most of its length. North of Waterfall it is the Princes Highway through the Sutherland Shire; south of Waterfall it is the M1 Princes Motorway the whole way down to Oak Flats. What actually differs between suburbs is where you join it and how long you stay on it.
The northern suburbs join at the top. Helensburgh sits on the plateau and never descends the escarpment at all, which is why it is the shortest run in the region at $242. Stanwell Park, Austinmer and Thirroul are below the cliff and climb back up either Bulli Pass or Lawrence Hargrave Drive, so they are closer to the airport than Wollongong is, despite being harder to leave.
Wollongong and the suburbs around it — Figtree, Fairy Meadow, Corrimal, Port Kembla — use Mount Ousley. That descent is the part of the drive people remember: escarpment on one side, the city and the ocean below, and trucks holding the pace because the road was engineered for them. Port Kembla is inside the Wollongong fare, which matters when the trip is a cruise rather than a flight.
South of Wollongong the motorway runs along the western shore of Lake Illawarra through Dapto to Oak Flats, and the Albion Park Rail bypass now carries it past the last of the traffic lights. Shellharbour, Shell Cove, Albion Park, Oak Flats and Warilla all pick the motorway up within a few minutes of one another, which is why their fares sit in such a narrow band.
At the southern end the motorway gives way to the Princes Highway for Minnamurra, Kiama Downs, Kiama and Jamberoo. Jamberoo is the one that surprises people: it is inland, up the valley rather than on the coast, and at $410 it is the top of the Illawarra ladder.
One local caveat worth knowing. The Mount Ousley interchange at the Wollongong end of the motorway is being rebuilt, and the work runs to a published schedule of overnight lane closures. Pickup times are set around the published closures rather than around an average. That is the sort of detail a personally confirmed booking absorbs and an app does not.
Weekday morning peak, northbound
The Illawarra half of the corridor moves. The Shire between Waterfall and the airport does not, between 07:00 and 09:30, and every timing row that crosses that window already carries a twenty-minute allowance.
Friday afternoon, southbound
From about 14:30 Sydney empties towards the coast, and the further south the address the longer the tail. Kiama and Jamberoo feel this considerably more than Helensburgh does.
School holidays
This corridor is also the road to Jervis Bay and the far South Coast, so the Illawarra carries other people's holidays through it in both directions. Add fifteen to twenty minutes on the Saturday at either end.
Weather on the escarpment
Mount Ousley in the wet and Bulli Pass in cloud are the two known slow spots, and each costs about ten minutes. Neither is dramatic and both are allowed for when the pickup time is set.
Pick-up
Where the car waits, by suburb.
A named kerb in each part of the region rather than a suburb name and a promise. Every one of these is a routine pickup, and none of them is the only address in its town.
Helensburgh and Stanwell Park
The plateau end of the region. Neither has to descend the escarpment to reach the motorway, and Helensburgh at $242 is the shortest published run in the Illawarra.
Thirroul, Austinmer and the coast strip
Lawrence Hargrave Drive is the spine and the streets off it are narrow. Thirroul has a page of its own and its own $304 fare; Austinmer is published at $298.
Wollongong beachfront, CBD and the university
Crowne Plaza on Marine Drive, Novotel Northbeach on Cliff Road, and the Kooloobong and Campus East residences. All of them sit inside the $341 Wollongong fare.
Wollongong Hospital and Shellharbour Hospital
Crown Street and Madigan Boulevard, main entrances rather than emergency. An appointment is priced as a round trip with the waiting inside the fare.
Port Kembla
Inside the Wollongong fare rather than a separate rate. Cruise movements are worth booking further ahead than flights, because a ship disembarking puts several hundred people onto one kerb inside an hour.
Shellharbour, Shell Cove and the marina
The village, the City Centre at Stockland and the marina estate all sit at $374. Shellharbour and Shell Cove each have a page of their own.
Kiama, Minnamurra and Jamberoo
The southern end, where the motorway hands over to the Princes Highway. Kiama has a page of its own; Minnamurra, Kiama Downs and Jamberoo are published on the ladder below.
Honestly compared
The region's actual options.
This is a hundred-kilometre airport corridor with a railway line running down the middle of it, which is unusual, and it changes the honest answer for a good share of the region.
| Option | What it costs | Roughly | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| OSPIPO chauffeur | $242 to $410 fixed | 1h to 1h 35m | One car for the whole region. If it is already booked at your hour, you cannot have it, and no amount of notice conjures a second one. |
| South Coast Line, from your own station | An Opal fare plus $17.92 | Two hours and up, with the change | The strongest alternative in this table and genuinely cheap. It assumes your suburb has a platform — Helensburgh, Thirroul, Wollongong, Dapto and Kiama do; Shell Cove, Jamberoo and much of Shellharbour do not — and that the first service of the day is early enough, which for a 06:00 flight it is not. |
| Rideshare | Variable, surges | About the same | Reliable around Wollongong in daylight and thin at both ends of the region before dawn. Nothing can be booked days ahead, and the multiplier is agreed before you see the road. |
| Metered taxi | Not knowable in advance | About the same | The meter runs on distance and on waiting, so the longer the run the wider the uncertainty. Tolls and the airport charge are added at the end. |
| Drive and park at the airport | $51.00 to $62.00 a day | Same again, twice | Fine for two nights from anywhere in the region. Over a fortnight the car park outruns every fare in this table, and it puts a family member on Mount Ousley in the dark twice. |
If you live within walking distance of a South Coast Line platform, are travelling alone in daylight and have a cabin bag, take the train. That describes a real share of this region and it would be dishonest to write a page pretending otherwise. The case for a fixed-price car is the pre-dawn departure, the suburb with no station, the family with checked bags, and the number that has to be known in advance rather than after.

Which Illawarra suburb is mine?
Your own street's road distance, built on the same $60 base, $3.30 a kilometre and $1.32 NSW Passenger Service Levy as every line on the ladder. Corrimal, Fairy Meadow, Woonona, Bulli, Unanderra and Warilla are routine pickups with no published row of their own. Each is quoted where its distance puts it, between Helensburgh at $242 and Jamberoo at $410, never rounded up to the next suburb. The figure is locked at booking and no card details are taken.
No, and this is the correction that mattered most on the old site. Figtree is $350 and Wollongong is $341 because Figtree sits three kilometres further from the airport by road. The difference is small and it is real. The same holds for Dapto at $367 and Albion Park at $387 — neither is quietly folded into a neighbour's number.
Because Helensburgh never leaves the plateau. It is $242 against $304 for Thirroul, and the gap is nineteen kilometres and one escarpment. Helensburgh is the cheapest published Illawarra fare and Jamberoo at $410 is the dearest. Everything else falls between them strictly in order of distance.
Either, because both are published at $374 over the same 95 km and the same 85 minutes. Use the Shell Cove page if you are in the marina estate, where the pickup detail is building names, unnamed streets and gated basement entrances. Use the Shellharbour page for the village or the City Centre, where narrow streets are the difficulty rather than finding the right front door. Whichever page you use, the $374, the car and the chauffeur are the same.
Kiama sits on this ladder, published at $408, alongside Kiama Downs at $397, Minnamurra at $393 and Jamberoo at $410. Gerringong and everything south of it belong to the Shoalhaven table instead, though the pricing rule does not change at that boundary — only the road distance does. All four figures hold in either direction, and nothing is paid until the end of the journey.
Yes, and by more than people expect. Thirroul is 74 km and Wollongong is 85 km, so for the same flight a Thirroul departure leaves ten minutes later than a Wollongong one. Helensburgh is quicker again.
It is one of the few corners of Sydney where being further from the city is also being closer to the airport.
Rarely, and the honest answer is worth having early. The sedan carries 3 adults with 2 large checked suitcases, so a pickup at Thirroul, then Wollongong, then Dapto is a capacity problem before it is a timing one. Extra stops are named at booking and priced into the figure before you agree to it, since the $341 Wollongong fare assumes one address. If the party will not fit, you will be told so and pointed at an operator who can carry it.
No, and any page that says so is rounding in its own favour. There are fourteen published Illawarra fares running from $242 to $410 in strict order of road distance.
The previous version of this page advertised the region 'from $341' in its navigation while quoting Helensburgh at $242 further down the same page. A published ladder exists precisely so that cannot happen.
No question matches that. Try a shorter word, or ask the concierge.
