Katoomba lands almost exactly on the formula — $424 against $424.32 at 110 km, so the receipt shows 32 cents of rounding and nothing else. Lithgow is the same story at 150 km. The mountains are one of the few corridors where the published fare and the per-kilometre figure agree to within a dollar.

Worked from 110 minutes of driving, plus 10 minutes to load at the kerb, plus 3 hours inside the terminal for an international departure and 2 hours for a domestic one. A 20-minute allowance is added where the drive runs through the morning peak. Arriving instead of departing? Then none of this applies: give the flight number and the pickup moves to the actual landing time, with 2 hours free at T1 and 1 hour at T2 and T3.
The corridor
The climb from Emu Plains to Katoomba.
M4 west to Penrith, and for the first sixty kilometres it is an ordinary motorway run. Then the road crosses the Nepean at Emu Plains and starts climbing, and the drive changes character completely.
The Great Western Highway from Lapstone to Katoomba gains roughly a thousand metres. It is a good road and a slow one — dual carriageway in parts, single in others, with roadworks somewhere along it more often than not. The published 1h 50m already assumes that; it is not the number you get from a mapping app on a clear Sunday.
Through Springwood, Faulconbridge, Woodford and Wentworth Falls the highway threads the towns. Leura and Katoomba are the top of it, at around a thousand metres, which is why the temperature at the drop-off is routinely eight degrees below the airport.
Beyond Katoomba the road continues through Blackheath and down Victoria Pass to Lithgow — another forty kilometres and the most spectacular descent in the state. Blackheath, Leura, Medlow Bath and Mount Victoria are all quoted by the same formula and driven the same way.
Winter mornings
Fog on the highway above Springwood is common and occasionally thick. It costs fifteen to twenty minutes and the published timing allows for it. Snow above Blackheath happens a few days a year and closes Victoria Pass; you will be told before the day rather than at the roadside.
Roadworks
The Great Western Highway upgrade has been running for years in one section or another. It is a permanent feature of this corridor rather than an event, and the drive time on this page assumes it.
Weekends and school holidays
The mountains fill up. Westbound Saturday morning and eastbound Sunday afternoon are both slow through Leura and Katoomba. Add twenty minutes.
The temperature at the top
Katoomba runs six to ten degrees below the airport. The cabin is set before you get in either way, but it is worth knowing what you are stepping out into.

Katoomba Street and the Carrington

Echo Point and Scenic World
Both have proper set-downs. On a busy weekend the Echo Point car park is the slower of the two.
Leura Mall
Straightforward outside peak. On a Saturday, the Megalong Street end is quicker.

If you are going up for a week with a suitcase and no schedule, take the train — it is a beautiful line and a fraction of the price. Book this when you have landed at 06:00, when there are two of you with luggage, or when the return leg from Katoomba at 04:00 needs to actually exist.
