Kangaroo Valley day trip by private car
The village, Hampden Bridge and the river — a private charter from Sydney, or a return from Berry and Nowra. Fixed fares, paid on arrival.
From Sydney, Kangaroo Valley is a full day — about 2h 20m each way from the CBD — and the $890 private charter (up to 8 hours door to door) costs less than the $975 return. From Berry a private car is $225 return, from Nowra $245 and from Kiama $325 — dropped in the village and collected later — or add $50 an hour for the driver to wait. Fixed per car for up to 3 passengers, pay on arrival; OSPIPO is a licensed NSW private transfer (BSP-462516).

Kangaroo Valley at a glance
Kangaroo Valley is a village in the Shoalhaven, between the Southern Highlands and the coast. Its landmark is Hampden Bridge, a suspension bridge with sandstone towers carrying Moss Vale Road over the Kangaroo River, opened to traffic on 2 February 1898 and listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. Beside it are the Kangaroo Valley Pioneer Village Museum and a park with barbecues and a spot to launch a canoe.
Destination NSW suggests paddling the Kangaroo River and the Historic Village Walk, which takes around an hour — and says the valley is known for its pies. Shops and cafés keep their own hours; Museums & Galleries of NSW lists the Pioneer Village Museum as open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10am–4pm, so check before you go.
Three ways to do it — fixed fares
- Dropped off, collected later. The driver leaves after drop-off and comes back at the time you choose — you pay the return fare and nothing for the hours in between. From Berry: $225 return. From the Sydney CBD it is $975 return — more than the charter, so from the city the charter is usually the better buy.
- The driver waits. The car stays on standby and you leave when you are ready: the return fare plus $50 an hour, booked in whole hours, up to 5 hours. From Berry: $275 with 1 hour, $325 with 2, $475 with 5.
- A full day with several stops. A private charter: $890 for up to 8 hours door to door, the car and driver yours for the day, as many stops as fit. From the Sydney CBD the drive is about 2h 20m each way, which leaves about 3 hours 15 minutes in the valley and anywhere else you stop.

Fixed per car for up to 3 passengers — four travel only on request, with light bags — and child seats are free. Motorway tolls, GST and the NSW levy are included, nothing is added on the day, and you pay on arrival, with no deposit. Waiting is $50 for each hour you book, up to 5. Where a return comes to more than the $890 private charter, the charter is the better buy if your day fits inside its 8 hours door to door — from the Sydney CBD the drive is about 2h 20m each way, which leaves about 3 hours 15 minutes in the valley; from Sydney Airport the drive is about 1h 55m each way, which leaves about 4 hours in the valley. Fares come from the same engine as the booking form; drive times are typical outside peak hours (OpenStreetMap routing).
Getting there without a car
We found no regular public transport to Kangaroo Valley — no Transport for NSW service to the village — and Destination NSW’s day-trip itinerary says you need a car. The nearest South Coast Line stations are Berry and Bomaderry (Nowra), with no official bus link onwards.
Hampden Bridge is under repair until late 2026. Some nights it closes to all vehicles (Transport for NSW), and the detours can add up to 90 minutes, so check Live Traffic NSW before an evening trip that crosses it. By day it stays open under stop/slow traffic control, and walkers can still cross during the night closures.
Good to know
- From Sydney the day is mostly driving: about 2h 20m each way from the CBD. The 8-hour charter leaves about 3 hours 15 minutes for the village, the bridge and lunch — or for Berry as well.
- Paddling the Kangaroo River and the Historic Village Walk (about an hour) are the two things Destination NSW suggests; the Pioneer Village Museum is beside Hampden Bridge.
- Hampden Bridge works run to late 2026 — check Live Traffic NSW if you are heading out after dark.
Make a day of it
Kangaroo Valley pairs naturally with Berry, over the range — a classic Sydney day with two stops, which is the $890 private charter: up to 8 hours door to door.
- Berry — about 20 min over the range — Queen Street, the cafés and the markets.
- Jervis Bay — the bay south of Nowra — Huskisson and Hyams Beach.
- Kiama Blowhole — up the coast at Kiama — the blowhole and the lighthouse.
