Jervis Bay & Hyams Beach day trip by private car
Huskisson for the cruises, Hyams Beach for the sand — a private charter from Sydney, or a return from Nowra and Berry. Fixed fares, paid on arrival.
From Sydney, Jervis Bay is a long day — about 2h 55m each way from the CBD — and the $890 private charter (up to 8 hours door to door) costs less than the $1,125 return. From Nowra a private car to Huskisson is $245 return and from Berry $335 — dropped off and collected later — or add $50 an hour for the driver to wait. Hyams Beach costs a little more: $295 return from Nowra. Fixed per car for up to 3 passengers, pay on arrival; OSPIPO is a licensed NSW private transfer (BSP-462516).

Jervis Bay at a glance
Jervis Bay is home to the NSW Jervis Bay Marine Park. Huskisson, about twenty minutes south-east of Nowra (Shoalhaven Tourism), is where the bay cruises and seasonal whale-watching trips leave from the wharf. The Jervis Bay Maritime Museum, with the visitor information centre, is on Dent Street, next to the Huskisson Mangrove Boardwalk — 1.4 km of raised path over the mangroves of Currambene Creek. Hyams Beach, further south, is a village with an unpatrolled beach about 2 km long.
About 60 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins live in the bay, and dolphin-watching cruises run all year (NSW DPIRD). Whale season is May to November, and Shoalhaven Tourism says humpbacks are seen in the sheltered water of the bay from mid-October to late November. Book cruises directly with an operator.
Three ways to do it — fixed fares
- Dropped off, collected later. The driver leaves after drop-off and comes back at the time you choose — you pay the return fare and nothing for the hours in between. From Nowra: $245 return. From the Sydney CBD it is $1,125 return — more than the charter, so from the city the charter is usually the better buy.
- The driver waits. The car stays on standby and you leave when you are ready: the return fare plus $50 an hour, booked in whole hours, up to 5 hours. From Nowra: $295 with 1 hour, $345 with 2, $495 with 5.
- A full day with several stops. A private charter: $890 for up to 8 hours door to door, the car and driver yours for the day, as many stops as fit. From the Sydney CBD the drive is about 2h 55m each way, which leaves about 2 hours at the bay and anywhere else you stop.

Fixed per car for up to 3 passengers — four travel only on request, with light bags — and child seats are free. Motorway tolls, GST and the NSW levy are included, nothing is added on the day, and you pay on arrival, with no deposit. Waiting is $50 for each hour you book, up to 5. Where a return comes to more than the $890 private charter, the charter is the better buy if your day fits inside its 8 hours door to door — from the Sydney CBD the drive is about 2h 55m each way, which leaves about 2 hours at the bay; from Sydney Airport the drive is about 2h 30m each way, which leaves about 3 hours at the bay. Fares come from the same engine as the booking form; drive times are typical outside peak hours (OpenStreetMap routing).
Getting there without a car
There is no train to Jervis Bay. The South Coast Line ends at Bomaderry (Nowra), and from there bus route 102 runs to Huskisson and Vincentia on weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays and public holidays (Transport for NSW). A separate route serves Hyams Beach from Vincentia; check its timetable, because bus times across the Shoalhaven may change with the new train timetable from Sunday 15 November 2026.
By car, Huskisson is about 2h 55m from the Sydney CBD and 20 min from Nowra.
Good to know
- Hyams Beach village parking is very limited and fills in busy periods (Shoalhaven Tourism), and in past summer holidays the council turned cars away once the village was full. A drop-off with a set pick-up time works best there.
- Hyams Beach is unpatrolled, like all the beaches in the bay (Shoalhaven Tourism).
- From Sydney the day is long: about 2h 55m each way from the CBD, so the 8-hour charter leaves about 2 hours at the bay. For more time, book the return ($1,125) and choose the pick-up time — or stay a night.
- Whale season runs May to November; outside it, the cruises are for the dolphins, which stay all year. The Huskisson Market runs on the second Sunday of each month (Destination NSW).
Make a day of it
From Sydney, Berry makes the natural stop on the way down or back. Two stops is the $890 private charter, up to 8 hours door to door — on a Jervis Bay day the drive takes most of it, so keep it to one or two.
- Berry — on the way down — Queen Street, the cafés and the markets.
- Kangaroo Valley — inland from Nowra — the village and Hampden Bridge.
- Kiama Blowhole — further north at Kiama — the blowhole and the lighthouse.
