Nan Tien Temple at a glance
Nan Tien Temple is a Buddhist temple complex of the Taiwan-based Fo Guang Shan order at Berkeley, on Wollongong’s southern outskirts. It was built mainly between 1992 and 1995 and was listed on the NSW State Heritage Register in 2024. Entry and visitor parking are free.
The temple opens Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays, 9am to 5pm, and is closed on Mondays that are not public holidays. Visitors are asked to make their way to the gates by 4:30pm, so set the ride back for then at the latest. The Dew Drop Inn Tea House serves vegetarian meals: Tuesday to Friday 10am–4pm, and 9:30am–4:30pm at weekends and on public holidays.
Three ways to do it — fixed fares
- Dropped off, collected later. The driver leaves after drop-off and comes back at the time you choose — you pay the return fare and nothing for the hours in between. From Wollongong: $215 return. From the Sydney CBD it is $655 return.
- The driver waits. The car stays on standby and you leave when you are ready: the return fare plus $50 an hour, booked in whole hours, up to 5 hours. From Wollongong: $265 with 1 hour, $315 with 2, $465 with 5.
- A full day with several stops. A private charter: $890 for up to 8 hours door to door, the car and driver yours for the day, as many stops as fit. From the Sydney CBD the drive is about 1h 35m each way, which leaves about 4 hours 45 minutes at the temple and anywhere else you stop.

Getting there without a car
The nearest station is Unanderra, on the South Coast Line. The temple says it is a 20–30 minute walk: leave on the industrial side of the station, go up Berkeley Road to the end, turn right and keep to the right-hand side to the main gate. Unanderra station has a lift.
Bus route 34 (Wollongong to Warrawong via Unanderra) stops at the temple’s back entrance on Nolan Street. Its timetable changed on 12 October 2026, and a new South Coast Line train timetable starts on Sunday 15 November 2026 — check Trip Planner before you go.
