The Sea Cliff Bridge at a glance
The Sea Cliff Bridge carries Lawrence Hargrave Drive out over the ocean between Coalcliff and Clifton, north of Wollongong. It opened on 11 December 2005, replacing a stretch of road closed in 2003 after repeated rockfalls. The advertised 665 metres covers two structures — the Sea Cliff Bridge itself (455.6 m) and the Lawrence Hargrave Drive Bridge (210 m) — and a shared path runs along it for walkers and cyclists.
It is a public road, so there are no hours and no tickets. Destination Wollongong’s advice is to park at one of the designated car parks and walk the bridge: Leeder Park or the Coalcliff Beach car park at the north end, or the limited parking just south of the bridge and near the Clifton School of Arts. The bridge is also a whale-watching spot in the migration season, May to November.
Three ways to do it — fixed fares
- Dropped off, collected later. The driver leaves after drop-off and comes back at the time you choose — you pay the return fare and nothing for the hours in between. From Wollongong: $270 return. From the Sydney CBD it is $460 return.
- The driver waits. The car stays on standby and you leave when you are ready: the return fare plus $50 an hour, booked in whole hours, up to 5 hours. From Wollongong: $320 with 1 hour, $370 with 2, $520 with 5.
- A full day with several stops. A private charter: $890 for up to 8 hours door to door, the car and driver yours for the day, as many stops as fit. From the Sydney CBD the drive is about 1h 30m each way, which leaves about 5 hours at the bridge and anywhere else you stop.

Getting there without a car
Coalcliff station, on the South Coast Line, is about 800 metres from the start of the bridge (Destination Wollongong) — around 15 minutes on foot, up a steep incline. Transport for NSW lists Coalcliff station as not accessible: it has stairs.
Bus route 2 (Stanwell Park to Wollongong via Thirroul) stops near both ends of the bridge, but tourism listings say it runs Monday to Saturday and not on public holidays — no Sunday service. A new South Coast Line train timetable starts on Sunday 15 November 2026.
Good to know
- Stay on the bridge path. An unofficial track above the road, sometimes called the Sea Cliff Bridge lookout, has no safety measures.
- Want to walk it one way? Ask to be collected at the Clifton end instead of the car park — put it in Special Requests when you book.
- Sunday 1 November 2026 is the MS Gong Ride: Lawrence Hargrave Drive is slowed to 40 km/h from Stanwell Park to Thirroul (6am–3pm) and the eastern side near the bridge is a no-parking clearway (5am–3pm), with crowds of cyclists — pick another day.
- Launching or landing a drone on council land near the bridge needs Wollongong City Council’s permission.
Make a day of it
The view from Bald Hill at Stanwell Tops, a swim at Coalcliff, lunch in Thirroul or Wollongong — this stretch of coast is made for stops. Two or more is a sightseeing day: the $890 private charter, up to 8 hours door to door.
- Symbio Wildlife Park — at Helensburgh, just off the M1 on the way down — koalas, cheetahs and a splash park.
- Nan Tien Temple — south of Wollongong at Berkeley — a Buddhist temple, free to visit.
- Kiama Blowhole — further south at Kiama — the blowhole and the lighthouse.
