Symbio Wildlife Park at a glance
Symbio Wildlife Park is a family-owned wildlife park in Helensburgh, on Sydney’s southern edge, founded in 1975. It keeps Australian animals — koalas, kangaroos, wombats, little penguins — alongside cheetahs, red pandas, lemurs and meerkats, with a farmyard, a splash park and an adventure playground. Keeper talks run daily, and behind-the-scenes animal experiences can be booked with the park.
It opens every day, 9:30am to 5pm, except Christmas Day — public holidays included. Tickets are sold online or at the door; Symbio says weekdays are quieter and weekends have a lively buzz.
Three ways to do it — fixed fares
- Dropped off, collected later. The driver leaves after drop-off and comes back at the time you choose — you pay the return fare and nothing for the hours in between. From Wollongong: $295 return. From the Sydney CBD it is $535 return.
- The driver waits. The car stays on standby and you leave when you are ready: the return fare plus $50 an hour, booked in whole hours, up to 5 hours. From Wollongong: $345 with 1 hour, $395 with 2, $545 with 5.
- A full day with several stops. A private charter: $890 for up to 8 hours door to door, the car and driver yours for the day, as many stops as fit. From the Sydney CBD the drive is about 1h 10m each way, which leaves about 5 hours 30 minutes at Symbio and anywhere else you stop.
| From (drive) | One way | Return, collected later | Return, driver waits 2 h |

Fixed per car for up to 3 passengers — four travel only on request, with light bags — and child seats are free. Motorway tolls, GST and the NSW levy are included, nothing is added on the day, and you pay on arrival, with no deposit. Waiting is $50 for each hour you book, up to 5. Fares come from the same engine as the booking form; drive times are typical outside peak hours (OpenStreetMap routing).
Getting there without a car
Symbio says to take a South Coast Line train to Helensburgh station, where a bus runs to the park; the NRMA names it as route 15, a trip of about 15 minutes, and an Opal card is needed. Helensburgh station has a lift, and the park is a few kilometres from it, so the bus is the way without a car.
Route 15’s timetable changed on 12 October 2026, and a new South Coast Line train timetable starts on Sunday 15 November 2026 — check Trip Planner close to the day.
Good to know
- Open every day 9:30am–5pm except Christmas Day, public holidays included.
- Bring a picnic if you like: there are shaded picnic areas, as well as an on-site café, the splash park and an adventure playground.
- Accessibility: most paths are hard-surfaced (one short gravel section), with accessible toilets, seating and shade throughout; certified assistance animals are welcome.
- Daily keeper talks and free presentations are part of the day; behind-the-scenes animal experiences are booked separately with the park.
Make a day of it
Symbio, the Bald Hill lookout and the Sea Cliff Bridge sit close together at the top of the Illawarra. Two or more stops is the $890 private charter — up to 8 hours door to door, with about 1h 10m each way from the Sydney CBD.
- Sea Cliff Bridge — further down Lawrence Hargrave Drive — walk the bridge over the ocean at Coalcliff.
- Nan Tien Temple — south of Wollongong at Berkeley — a Buddhist temple, free to visit.
